Surprisingly in love with Frye

The first thing at comes to mind when I think about Frye is boots. Really cute boots (which I will buy eventually), but just boots. Well, I was surfing their website lately...like I do way too much...and I had an epiphany. They make cute shoes. Like really, really adorable shoes (and handbags!). Check it out:

Grace T Strap, $228 at fryeboots.com, June Slingback, $198 at fryeboots.com. These those shoes on the left came in black/dark brown, I would have bought them already. Seriously. I love them. They're the perfect mix of sturdy, boho, and a little edgy with the tiny studs. And how hot are those wedges? I love how the leather and the wood wedge match exactly, with the contrast of the subtle brass hardware.

June T Strap, $198 at fryeboots.com, Dara T Strap, $188 at fryeboots.com. That is such a gorgeous green, and it's so cheerful with the pale wood! I just want to put these on and dance around in 70's inspired outfits (which is possible because of the comfy platform). I am seriously in love with those dark brown sandals. They've got a vintage Chloe thing going on, with the wood and the boho vibe. Those plus a floaty sundresses = insanely chic.

Mary Studded T Strap, $158 at fryeboots.com, Vanessa Woven 2 Piece, $158 at fryeboots.com. So not only does Frye do great heels, but adorable flats as well. The studded sandals are on the edgier side, and the pale purple sandals are just the right amount of girly.

If You Buy One Thing

I'm sure you've heard all about wardrobe classics, but if you're like me, you kind of nod your head and then it goes straight in one ear and straight out the other. I mean, it's hard to save up for the perfect LBD when you walk into Forever 21 and see bright, cheap, fashion forward clothes everywhere. But my New Year's resolution was to stop buying disposable fashion, and I'm on a mission. One of the top items on my list? A trench coat. If that sounds cliche, irrelevant, or boring to you, bare with me.

First off, if you think you live somewhere too hot for a trench coat, you're wrong. I live in SoCal. It's been 50 degrees for the last two weeks. I would really appreciate a trench right now. Also, trenches are not that warm. They're essentially heavy raincoats, it's the optional inserts that make them warm. That makes them perfect for any climate, because they should be waterproof, and can adjust to warmer or cooler locations.

Now, if you think trenches are boring and old-ladyish, you've got another think coming (yes, I just quoted To Kill a Mockingbird, I'm tired, humor me). Trenches have stuck around for the last hundred or so years because the design is timeless for any age. Just look at Catherine Deneuve in Belle du Jour or Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. They were both young actresses playing a prostitute and a party girl. Not exactly frumpy characters. And if that doesn't convince you, I've seen countless trenches appear on Gossip Girl.

Trenches are fantastic because they instantly pull an outfit together. Put a trench over a tee and jeans, and you've got a chic weekend outfit. Put a trench over a cocktail dress, and you can go anywhere. Plus, they're also perfect for the morning walk of shame--button up a trench over last night's party dress, and no one has to know that you haven't changed. And trenches don't have to be Burberry expensive. I wouldn't recommend getting one at Forever 21 or H&M, because the buttons will start falling off, threads will come out, etc., but there are affordable trenches to be found. For longevity, stick to neutral colors, but there are adorable metallic and bright colored trenches to be found as well--stick with whatever fits your personal style.

Paul & Joe Double-breasted Trench, $210 at net-a-porter.com

Audrey is rocking that trench, and in the rain too. That takes skill.

Paris Round-up #1

It's Paris Fashion Week! Ahhhh this is my favorite time of the year. I love Paris because the big guns come out right away. Check out Balmain, Balenciage, and Nina Ricci below.

All Balmain: I just have to get this out of my system. I LOVE BALMAIN. @#^#@$@%. Love. Lots of tight, super mini-dresses, with sequin, stud, or leather detailing. The neckline on the first dress is fantastic, I love the geometric lines on the second dress, and I would sell my kidney for that skirt in the middle. Drapey tee + rocker chic, heavily embellished skirt = big ball of amazingness.

All Balmain: Another sequined skirt! There were lots of his signature sharp shouldered jackets, this time with a little less of a military vibe and some cute sequin trim. And how gorgeous is that half-gown? It would be so dramatic walking down a red carpet. Drool.

All Nina Ricci: If Olivier Theyskens is fired, I quit. I don't know what I'm quitting, but I quit. Just look at this collection. The man is a genius. A kooky genius, but a genius. The ombre, turquoise detailing on that black mini-dress is beyond words (just like those platform shoes). The sculptural leather jacket and sequin purple dress is gorgeous, and the lines on the black dress are undescribably amazing. They're so subtle, but so unreal.

Azzaro, Balenciaga, Rue du Mail. The combination of simple LBD with big bow neckline is super-girly, but chic. As always, Balenciaga is fantastic. That tuxedo jacket and those pants will be mine. And so will that wide collared jacket from Rue du Mail. I've never seen an entirely light gray outfit look so rich.

Alexander McQueen for Target

So I had the chance to stop by my local Target this afternoon and check out the McQ collection, and I have some bad news. It ain't pretty. For starters, there are lots of flimsy, tackily printed tees and leggings that I didn't see in the preview. The fabrics are really thin, and pretty cheap, and the clothes just looked overpriced and lackluster in real life. Sigh. There were a few things that I think you should check out though:

Studded Denim Jacket, $59.99 at target.com, Trench Coat $79.99 at target.com. I think the jacket is a given. It wasn't at my Target, but I don't really think this could go wrong. I mean, it's a studded, grey denim biker jacket. Same with the trench; I mean, how badly could a black, glazed trench go?

TRS Pant, $39.99 at target.com. I actually saw these in the store today, and they're pretty cute! The fabric is decent, I like the cut and the length, and if they weren't pinstriped, I would have gotten them.

Who needs shoes?

Ok, I know that Prom/graduation/spring dances are coming up for a lot of people, and one of the main things that's on your mind, if you're crazy like me, is what shoes to buy. You want hot shoes, but you don't want to spend all your money on a premier designer pair. I know your pain. I rounded up a few affordable, but still fashion forward options that would be great for any formal event coming up.

Report Signature Glitter Open-toe Pump, $137.92 at endless.com, Pelle Moda Vintage Peep-toe Platform, $184.95 at endless.com. These two are totally classic styles with a bit of a twist. The subtle glitter on the left shoe adds a little bling that makes it festive and fun, and the patent leather on the right shoe gives it a bit of an edge.

Nine West Balboa Gladiator, $88.95 at endless.com, Report Signature Rockwell, $187 at revolveclothing.com. The Nine West gladiator is a softer take on the dominatrix, bondage look that's big right now, with a nice, sturdy cone heel. The Report has a fantastic two tone and two texture look that's definitely unique, but very understated.

Lamb Spectator Pump, $102 at revolveclothing.com, Pelle Moda Caspian Peep-toe Platform Pump, $179.95 at endless.com. How cute are those spectator pumps! The little bows make this typically masculine style completely feminine, and if these came in grey/black/white, I would have bought two already. But my favorite are these Pelle Moda platforms. The cut-out pattern is super sexy, the cone heel and thick platform are not only hot, but very sturdy, and the graphic band of pale wood cutting through the black platform is just such a fantastic look.

An Afterglow Flush

I have a love-hate relationship with the Nars Multiple in Orgasm. When it's good, it's really good, and when it's bad, it's awful. Maybe that's where the name comes from...(I love all the Nars names. Every time someone asks me what blush I'm wearing, I can just say "Orgasm," and then laugh at their very confused facial expressions. Good times...). Here are the pics, the review's below:

I don't know what to categorize this as. It's not really a blush, but it's not really a highlighter. It's sort of a combination of the two. From now one, this is going to be called a blushlighter. That sounds awkward. Whatever. Orgasm is the famous, peachy-pink shade with gold shimmer. It's a very flattering color IF you are on the pale side and have absolutely no red in your skin. If the color works for you, you get a warm, subtle golden glow. If it doesn't work, you end up looking sunburned (hence my love-hate relationship. I have the occasional case of redface.), or absolutely the same, because it's a very sheer color that wouldn't show up on darker skin. The consistency is very similar to a cream shadow/blush, but a little thinner (very easy to apply), and it can feel a little grainy as the glitter is on the coarser side. The glitter is another issue. There is serious glitter fallout, and you either end up looking pretty and glowy, or like Rupaul attacked your face. Not cute. As for staying power, well, it's not great. I'd put it at 4-5 hours, so this isn't ideal if you want your makeup to last from 9 to 5 (or later).

On the plus side, it's really easy to apply and layer for more pigmentation, it can look really good, and it won't break you out. On the down side, it's pretty expensive ($37), it doesn't last very long, and it can look really bad. You do get a lot in the tube, though; I've had mine for about 18 months now, and I'm not even halfway through.

So, if you are paleish, have a reasonably red-free complexion, and can stand to carry this around in your purse for touchups, splurge on this. Otherwise, there are other, cheaper products that would work better for your lifestyle and complexion.

Available for $37 at sephora.com

The Superhero of Eyebrow Pencils

I'm obsessed with eyebrows. It's kind of weird. But seriously, humor me for a second. If your eyes are the window to your soul, then your eyebrows are like the picture frame to your soul! And I think everyone's seen an example of how a tacky frame can absolutely ruin a good picture, and how a great frame can compliment and even elevate a work of art. Now, if you have naturally bushy, awesome eyebrows, ignore this post. If you're like me and tend to over pluck/have a giant scar in one eyebrow where your little brother threw a plastic animal at your head, or just like the look of a strong brow, then this is for you.

Meet: The Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil.

This thing is freaking magical. First off, they have a wide range of colors (about 6 total). If that doesn't seem like a lot to you, consider this: my one Medium Ash Brown pencil worked with my natural hair/brow color, sandy light brown, and still works with my current hair/brow color, deep reddish brown. They're two pretty different colors, but somehow the pencil blends into my brows just the same. Like I said, it's magical. The pencil has a hard, waxy consistency, which is perfect because it not only stays on all day (seriously this time), but the wax helps keep unruly hairs in place (it also comes with a brush on the other end to help with that) and you can sharpen it to a really fine point and draw on teensy hair sized lines.

Now, on first glance this looks expensive. It's $22. BUT let me explain. I've had mine for about a year, I use it heavily every day, and I still have about 2 months left in it. So if it lasts about 14 months, that $22 pencil breaks down to about $1.57 a month. That's not a steep price for runway ready brows!

The Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil is available for $22 at sephora.com
