Today's Cravings

Hello, four day weekend.  How long I've waited for you.  Well, not that long since I have three papers and a midterm to work out before Monday, but it's the thought that counts.  To get me in a happier place, I put together some pretty things.  It always does the trick.

YARNZ Butterfly Mosaic Scarf, $170 at shopbop.com, Foley + Corinna Stripley Mid City Tote, $495 at shopbop.com: I need this scarf in my life.  It's seven feet long, all cashmere, and covered in tiny butterflies.  Butterflies!  Ah.  So cute.  I want to wear it with a white tee and some plain jeans.  There's something so snuggly and cozy about big cashmere scarves.  And they're super handy for traveling, because they can double as blankets on long flights.  I have the plain, brown version of this bag, and I love it to death.  The textured black version, however, is calling to me.  It's a little more urban and punky, which works so well with the basic shape, but since it's a neutral color, it works with everything.

Elizabeth & James Holiday Skirt, $245 at shopbop.com, Sandro Rancon Silk and Tulle Dress, $395 at net-a-porter.com: This skirt is so flouncy and holiday-ish!  I love that it looks a bit like a modern crinoline, and then you have the black hue and the leather waistband to add some modern edge.  I'd pair it with a lightly embellished white tank and some costume jewelry.  Doesn't this dress scream holiday party?  The ruffled, swiss dot skirt is so festive and party appropriate, the white silk top is flattering and very wintery, and the bit of sparkle at the waist makes it so perfect for going out.  You could really do this and some black heels and be done.

Markus Lupfer Sinner Shirt, $185 at net-a-porter.com, and Sequin Spell Shirt, $265 at net-a-porter.com: I will freely admit that these shirts are way overpriced, but at the same time I still totally love them.  And the words are embroidered, which helps justify it a little bit.  Kinda.  This sinner shirt also has a counterpart that's white and says 'saint,' but I think it's mildly obnoxious to walk around with that across your chest, whereas this is just mildly hilarious.  I'd wear it to the coffee shop or on errands, with a pair of boots, straight-leg dark jeans, and some big sunglasses.  This Sequin Spell shirt reminds me of the "I put a spell on you" song from Hocus Pocus (LOVE IT).  It's just so funny and unexpectedly charming, no?  Plus, I love me some daytime sequins.

Erin Fetherston for Juicy Couture

Confession: I'm not a huge fan of Juicy Couture.  I've never worn a pair of velour pants (or velour at all, for that matter).  The idea of having Juicy across my butt makes me nauseated.  But this Erin Fetherston for Juicy Couture collection...I like it.  There are separates, dresses, jewelry, bags, and shoes, and they're all of kind of adorable.  I rounded up a few of my favorites below.

Embellished Scoopneck Tee, $158 at juicycouture.com, Draped Silk Skirt, $198 at juicycouture.com: I love the combination of these pieces and I love them separately!  I'm always looking for embellished tees.  This one drapes so nicely, the sleeves cover up a multitude of sins, and the necklace embellishment adds a bit of glamour without being so over the top that it loses versatility.  The draping of that skirt is so spot-on it's ridiculous.  Oh, Erin Fetherston.  The way that it swags over the hips makes you look narrower than you actually are, and the russet color is so perfect for fall.

Bustier Dress, $298 at juicycouture.com: This dress also comes in black, but I love the combo of the faded red and the light pink, and the soft sheen of the velvet against the shine of the satin. The little bustier top against the draped skirt--so chic and so flattering.  I want to pair it with a little sparkly belt and a cuff bracelet and flounce around looking ridiculously chic.

Damsel Glitter Heels, $275 at juicycouture.com: These shoes belong on my feet.  They're covered in glitter, have giant boeson the peeptoes, and adorably chunky heels and platforms, so they have retro flair and they're actually comfortable.  These with black tights and a jewel-toned cocktail dress at a holiday party?  ADORABLE.

Spotted: Leighton Meester in Vera Wang

Sorry for failing yesterday.  I spent the majority of the day huddled on the futon re-reading social psychology notes and stressing about midterms.  Fun times!  To make up for said failure, here's a fab picture of Leighton Meester on the set of the ad for a new Vera Wang fragrance, and presumably wearing Vera Wang.

There's just so much pretty here--the juxtaposition of the fishtail ballgown and the fire escape, the undone hair against the drama of the dress, and that gorgeous berry-burgundy color.  Drool.  I die.  This paparazzi shot could be the actual ad, it's so well-composed.

Review: FX Silk Drops Hair Serum

I'm so inconsistent in my hair routine.  I have some products--shampoo, mousse and salt spray--that I am fiercely loyal to and won't consider branching out from.  And then I have some products that I end up buying a different version of every time I go to the drugstore, usually my iron guard and whatever treatment I'm using on my ends.  I went to CVS this weekend to pick up some of this, which I've been loving, and CVS was out!  Boo.  So I picked up some of this serum.

FX Silk Drops Hair Serum, $5.99 at cvs.com: You get a good sized amount for the price--more than you do with the Organix serums--and it smells surprisingly nice, very subtle and lemony with a slight herbal twist.  The cap twists up and then you squeeze the bottle to get the product out.  That makes it easy to get the right amount of serum, but I can see this spilling all over during traveling really easily.  That's part of why I have a love-hate relationship with serums.  They can be so messy, and stain everything, and if you use too much they make your hair really oily.  But if you use the right amount they can be miracle workers for dry, split ends.

As for this specific serum, I like it.  It's not OMG AMAZING, but it's pretty darn good.  I take a dime to nickle-sized amount on my palm, rub my hands together, and then run this through the bottom third of my hair right after I get out of the shower.  I'd definitely recommend using this on wet hair--using it on dry hair makes it much easier to overdo and take it to that greasy place.  Since it's a cocktail of different silicones, this serum does a great job at moisturizing and making your ends look shiny and healthy.  My ends feel nice and soft.  I really don't know why, but I'm not over the moon about this stuff.  It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not HG material.  I've heard it's a good alternative to the Chi Silk Infusion, and from the few times I've used Silk Infusion I'd have to agree.  They both have a similarly thick consistency and do the exact same thing to my hair.

Awkward Chic rating: B+.  It's a very solid product overall, but loses a few points for packaging and a general lack of wow factor.

This Belongs in My Life

This book needs to be in my life.

Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution by Caroline Weber, $11.56 at amazon.com: It is a literal history of what she wore during the revolution, the political and social impact that her clothing choices, and all that jazz.  DOESN'T THAT SOUND AMAZING???  I'm so curious.  I feel like there would be a lot of juicy tidbits in this.  How did she get her hair that high?  Was it just full of secrets? (Mean Girls reference, anyone?).

Has anyone read this?  Do you think it sounds awesome, or just cheesy?

Review: Maybelline The Colossal Volum Express Waterproof Mascara

Girls, today is a big day.  I bought a new mascara.  I know.  I'm still in shock.  If you don't know my history with mascara, it's a little traumatic.  Mascara and I have had some rough times.  It started with Diorshow and Benefit Bad Gal Lash in high school.  Instant raccoon face.  Tried Great Lash and a Boots mascara and Lancome Hypnose, and I've never loved any of them.  I have contacts and dry eyes, so I use lots of eye drops, and I've never found a non-waterproof mascara that can deal with that, so I always do waterproof.  The only mascara I've loved is Max Factor's Volume Couture Waterproof, and it's been discontinued in the U.S.  So I had to go on a search for a new mascara.

My requirements: no raccoon face.  I have such a fear of having raccoon face all day and no one telling me.  I want a little length, a little volume, and something that's easy to layer.  I've been scouring Makeupalley for something that could work for me, and today I just gave up, went to CVS, and grabbed this:

Maybelline The Colossal Volum Express Waterproof Mascara in Glam Black, about $8 at CVS.  Why do they spell volume wrong?  Ugh.  I honestly grabbed it because the packaging was entertaining.  It's very festive.  So here's the mascara itself.

And here's the brush.  The brush scared me.  It's a gigantic, Diorshow/Bad Gal Lash-sized brush, which is great for getting all of your lashes, but kind of hard to control.  I applied this in two coats, waiting about five minutes between them.  The first coat was very easy to apply, and you can get a lot of lashes from just one coat, which I love.  The second coat clumped a bit--nothing unfixable, but a little annoying.  The one thing that really bothered me about application is that I had to hold a credit card behind my lashes not to get mascara all over my brow bone.
As for what it does for my lashes, it gives me more length and volume than the Max Factor, it's a bit darker, and it doesn't make my lashes feel crispy like the Max Factor did.  It's not flaking at all, it seems to have no problems with my eye drops/contacts, and while it's not quite a false lash effect, it's definitely got some drama to it.

Awkward Chic rating: A-.  My only cons here are the ridiculously large brush and the slight clumping, but overall I think this is a really fab mascara.

Oh, Korres.

This is such a good deal my brain isn't even processing it.  Just look at how hardcore on sale these Korres duos are at the HSN website.  Not convinced?  Let's do some math.

That size of shower gel is $19.50, and that size of lotion is $29, so $48.50 together.  That's more than $30 savings.  Still not convinced?  What if I told you that Korres products aren't just eco-friendly, but they smell amazing and really, really work.

Korres Melon Hydrating Bath and Body Jumbo Duo, $16.95 at hsn.com, Korres Clementine Hydrating Bath and Body Duo, $16.95 at hsn.com:  Moral of the story?  Buy these as stocking stuffers for your friends.  Or for yourself.  Just stuff your own stocking.  Santa doesn't judge.
