Trend-spotting for Fall: Cut Outs

Alright, so I know it's a little early to be trend-spotting for next Fall/Winter, but there's a method to the madness. If you know what's going to be big next season, then you can start stocking up ahead of time, find great pieces on-sale, shop/clean out your own closet, etc. One of the things that I saw a lot of on the Fall runways was (were?) cut outs. And it makes sense. Cut outs are unexpectedly sexy and play off the underwear trend that's been building for a while now.

Preen, Twenty8Twelve, Behnaz Sarafpour.

Monique Lhuillier, Vena Cava, Stella McCartney:

As you can see, cut outs come in many different forms. They can be panels of sheer fabric like at Stella McCartney and Twenty8Twelve, they can be cut outs in a fabric that's laid over another fabric like at Preen, or they can just be regular cut outs like at Behnaz Sarafpour, Monique Lhuillier, and Vena Cava.

The great thing about cut outs is that they're really versatile. They can work on red carpet-worthy gowns, they can work on cocktail dresses, they can even work on everyday looks. Cut outs are probably best left to dresses (tees with cut outs? eh.), but they can work on lots of parts of the dress, in many different shapes, and sizes. This is really a trend that can work for anyone, any body type, and any occassion.
