Trend Spotting for Fall: Asymmetrical Gowns

Asymmetrical sleeves and detailing on LBDs and cocktail dresses was big for Fall, but what was even more interesting (to me at least) was that the asymmetry translated widely into the red carpet gowns. Asymmetrical sleeves, necklines, waistlines, and skirts were extremely popular, and I'm hoping that means that we'll see some riskier, more out-there gowns on the red carpet this year.

I love that asymmetry comes in so many different forms. I mean, there are some many different iterations of even an asymmetrical skirt: the diagonal overskirt at Oscar, the half gowns at Balmain and Jasmine Di Milo, the highly slit goddess dresses at Valentino, the multiple layers of asymmetrical skirts at Erin Fetherston and Nina Ricci. And then there at the necklines: one shouldered at Andrew Gn, Marchesa, Blumarine, Naeem Khan, Monique Lhuillier, Elie Saab, Giambattistta Valli, Collette Dinnigan, and Lela Rose. It's such a fun, flirty look, and it can really work for any age and any occassion. Try a one-shouldered or short in the front, long in the back t-shirt dress for day, and pull out the diagonal skirt, one-shouldered dresses for cocktails. This trend has been around the block, but I think this is the time I've seen it realized the most fully in that it's in any part of a dress and not just the bodice. The best part of this is that there are tons of asymmetrical dresses on the market right now, so this is a trend you can shop for and wear right now.
